I have implemented two algorithms in Java and when testing depth first search it seems to be taking an incredible amount of time when there are 12 nodes, when using A* it completes it in seconds, I was just wondering if this is to be expected or am I doing something wrong? Its running the search in the background now as I type this and has been going for a few minutes. I wouldnt normally mind but ive got to test up to 500 nodes which could take days at this rate, is this something I should expect or am I doing something wrong?

What exactly do you mean by 'nodes'? A search-tree with 500 nodes should be searched within milliseconds. Or is your test if the goal is found extreme complicated? –  MrSmith42 Jan 17 '13 at 16:44
    
Thanks for the reply, im not sure, I dont think so; im not too sure how id go about doing that! Edited the original question to include code @MrSmith42 its for the TSP, it runs fine up until I add a 9th node which is when it just seems to stop/it takes so long I dont receive the optimum route, which as I say is annoying when I need to test up to 500. –  thrash Jan 17 '13 at 16:45
    
Yeah, each route will have a cost and I need to find the route with the lowest cost. –  thrash Jan 17 '13 at 16:50
    
9 nodes in TSP means that the search-tree has (if we set start point as fix) 8! = 4030 tree-nodes to check. That explains the time needed. You cannot solve a TSP with 500 cities with 'depth first search' the search tree is far too big. –  MrSmith42 Jan 17 '13 at 16:52

you are not updating chosenRoute correctly; you always add "firstNode" with the same value to your arraylist, I think you should add the visited node. I will try to check that later

Ok then if you could that would be brilliant, I dont really know whats going wrong with it. I only tested small numbers when testing it so it seemed fine but now at the very last stage I realise it isnt at all! –  thrash Jan 17 '13 at 17:07
