My brain is in pain. I cannot figure what is happening here. I would pay if allowed the person with the best answer.

I have this Weight program for school and it allows user to input starting weight and than through a switch it calls various functions which are either allows user to gain weight or lose weight. Some functions return what I am expecting and some don't. These functions return what I expect cakeGain(), hardWorkout(), mediumWorkout(), but I cant figure out why I am getting incorrect returns on runLoss(), burgerGain(), pizzaGain() and easyWorkout(). I cannot seem to figure out any big difference between the functions and I have tried all kinds of options. I was originally passing my weight variable by reference to all the functions and letting them change the value but my instructor did not want all the pointers.

This is not beautiful code and I have commented out some sections which I will fix later. I know a lot of my work is bad form (system calls etc.) but my instructor has not taught us alternative methods or does not care. This is still considered a beginner course. All I am curious on is why some functions work when others do not.

how about we reduce the scope of the problem a little bit and focus on only one function for now. –  Sam I am Jan 18 '13 at 21:37
    
And don't just tell us that the function doesn't work, but tell us what actually does happen when you run it. Compiler error? Runtime Error? What does the error say? etc. –  Sam I am Jan 18 '13 at 21:38

When you print a double or a float value you shoud use %f

x = eatNutella();
printf("x is %f\n", x);

%d is for decimal values (like int)

The runLoss function does not return expected value. I have gone through it with the debugger and I can see the variable values are wrong but I cant figure out why. I will change my scanf's to %f but why does my cakeGain function work when it uses %i? –  Michael Brooks Jan 18 '13 at 21:44
    
Oh, cakeGain uses whole numbers even though they are assigned to be doubles. Let me change it and see. –  Michael Brooks Jan 18 '13 at 21:45

I originally had type int setup for variables where the user would be entering whole numbers but my instructor told me to make the values all doubles because I would be doing double math the values at some point. When I canged milesRan to an int, I got a really large odd number return. –  Michael Brooks Jan 18 '13 at 22:09
    
same problem with scanf. you are specifing integer format with %i but you are storing the resoult into a double. use scanf with %f. cplusplus.com/reference/cstdio/scanf –  Paolo Jan 18 '13 at 22:17
