How do I change variable value dynamically in makefile? I want to call specific target depending on value of macro.

For eg.

STATIC_LIB = TRUE

all: makelib $(var)

makelib:
ifeq (${STATIC_LIB}, TRUE)
    var=staticlib
else
    var=sharedlib
endif

Here i want to call either staticlib target or sharedlib target depending on the value of target.

The solution that you came up with would not work since $(var) would be evaluated before makelib is executed.

What you could do instead is to define makelib conditionally:

STATIC_LIB = TRUE
all : makelib

ifndef STATIC_LIB
makelib : sharedlib # line 5
else ifeq (${STATIC_LIB}, TRUE)
makelib : staticlib # line 7
else
makelib : sharedlib # line 9
endif

An ifndef conditional directive saves from an error that would occur in case STATIC_LIB is not defined.

But this wont work since makelib target is not present. Error: Nothing to be done for all –  Rajs123 Jan 20 '13 at 15:20
    
@rajlaxmisahu Make sure there are no spaces or tabs before the word makelib in your makefile on lines that correspond to lines 5, 7, 9 above. Cut and paste into a syntax aware editor might introduce tabs. –  Dmitri Chubarov Jan 20 '13 at 15:25
    
Tried it. It does not work. It should be because all will call makelib but makelib is not present as ifndef part is not executed. I even tried making a target a: ifndef STATIC_LIB makelib else ifeq ( ${STATIC_LIB}, TRUE ) makelib : staticlib else makelib : sharedlib endif and the calling all: a makelib which doesnot work –  Rajs123 Jan 20 '13 at 15:56
    
@Rajs123 ifndef test fails, therefore line 5 is not seen so we branch directly to the else ifeq part and line 7 is seen. This line defines the makelib target. The ifndef is there to protect the ifeq test that would break if the variable is not defined. –  Dmitri Chubarov Jan 20 '13 at 16:02

You can set var value before rule definition:

Edited, Makefile:

STATIC_LIB = TRUE

ifeq (${STATIC_LIB}, TRUE)
var=staticlib
else
var=sharedlib
endif

all: $(var)

staticlib:
    echo "staticlib"

sharedlib:
    echo "sharedlib"

Test:

make -f Makefile

Output:

echo "staticlib"
staticlib

This doesnot work as var=staiclib/sharedlib is executed at bash and $(var) is still null . I have tested this –  Rajs123 Jan 20 '13 at 15:30
    
@rajlaxmi sahu What version of make you use? ( make -v ). On GNU Make 3.81 it works fine. But .. You right, assignment of var written not properly. Now it fixed. My fault. –  D.Dt.Operator Jan 20 '13 at 15:53
