can anyone suggest a way to optimize my collision detection here? I have two CCArrays

CCArray allyArray;
CCArray enemyArray;

and I want to detect collision between each sprites in both arrays, so I did a nested array in my update method

-(void)update:(ccTime)dt
{
    CCARRAY_FOREACH(allyArray, allyTeam)
    {
        CCARRAY_FOREACH(enemyArray, enemyTeam)
        {
            if (CGRectIntersectsRect(allyTeam.boundingbox, enemyTeam.boundingbox)
            {
                 [enemyTeam runAction: hurtAnimation]; 
                 enemyTeam.health -= allyTeam.attackStrength; 
                 if(EnemyTeam.health <= 0) 
                 [enemyTeam runAction: deathAnimation];
                 enemyTeam.position = enemyTeam.resetPosition; 
            }
        }
    }
}

I found this method draw back my frame rate really quickly. if I have 100 sprites in each array, my frame rate would drop to 30 fps.

so my question is how can I better detect collision between large amount of sprites? it would be really great if you can provide me a link to some kind of tutorial that could help optimize this as well =)

Would be good to see what that "something" code is. 10,000 iterations by itself isn't going to make a difference in fps, whatever you do 10,000 times however will. –  LearnCocos2D Jan 21 '13 at 19:07

have you tested that this function is the problem, and not the 200 sprites? Are those sprites sprite-batched? Because if not, and they're mostly visible on the screen, that could easily kill your framerate depending on the device. If they're not all on screen, then limit the test to those on screen (or better: screen size + largest ally/enemy sprite size). –  LearnCocos2D Jan 22 '13 at 1:54
    
Also, just in case: run it on an actual device, using a release build. Performance testing in debug or on simulator makes little sense. –  LearnCocos2D Jan 22 '13 at 1:55
    
the sprites are batched yeah, and the sprites are animated. When you mean, on the screen, did you mean they are visible? I did run on my iPod touch 5, and it's Ok when only one array contains all the sprites, for example, if allyArray has 1000 sprites and enemyArray has non, it will not kill any frame rate, but if each Array contains 100 sprites, then it drop dramatically. I mean it's kinda make sense to me, because you got to iterate 10000 times each frame this way, so I was asking if there is a better way to do the collision detect. –  user1817517 Jan 23 '13 at 0:32
