I have an excel file in which the tree structure is presented. What I have to do is transfer this structure into the database table. Which I did. The problem I encountered concerns updating the structure. I ask for a help in the form of pseudocode which has to be able to
- add a node at the last level (there are 8 levels from 0 to 7)
- nodes from level 0 to level 6 have to be able to switch their parents. Fro example if there are nodes "x" and "y" in the level 4, and if node "x" has a child "x1", then "x1" has to be able to change the parent from "x" to "y". Of course there should be a track of history. In addition, the node that changes the parent has to keep his "old" ID and not get the new one. Finally when the node is placed into history his Rec_End attribute is set to yesterday (DATE - 1).
My table has the following structure:
- Column 1 - Product_Catalog_Elemet_KEY
- Column 2 - Product_Catalog_Element_NAM
- Column 3 - Parent_PCE_KEY
- Column 4 - Rec_Start
- Column 5 - Rec_End (9999-12-31 marks infinity)
The biggest challenge for me presents 2. point where levels 0 to 6 have to be able to switch their parents. That is the reason for posting this question.
The way I started doing it is: First I create a temporary table with attributes
The temporary table is created separately for every level.
The table is the result of the MINUS operation between the .xls file (which is transferred into one table) and the current tree. This is marked with flag "new". In addition MINUS is made between the current tree and the .xls file. Thas is marked with flag "old". These two parts are connected with UNION ALL into one table. And that table is the previously mentioned temporary table.
After that I am doing UPDATE of all records with flag "old". Then I am doing INSERT. And exactly in INSERT part is where I am encountering problems.
