I'm struggling with a very simple problem, I can solve this problem algorithmically, but I'm looking for a clean and easy way to do this.

I have a class like this:

public class Event {
    private int orderId;
    private int dpid;
    private String uuid;
    private List<Long> timestamps;
    private List<Integer> sids;

    public Event(int orderId, int dpid, String uuid, List<Long> timestamps, List<Integer> sids) {
        // set everything
    }
}

What I'm trying to do is take a List<Event> and aggregate this on multiple levels to form a kind of JSON structure where I can group together events that have some fields in common and have the non-common elements in arrays.

To make it clearer, here is the kind of representation I'm trying to achieve after grouping:

[
  {"orderId": orderId,
   "dpid": dpid,
   "uuids":
   [
     {
       "uuid": uuid,
       "sids":
       [
         {
           "sid": sid,
           "timestamp": timestamp
         },
         ...
       ]
     },
     ...
   ]
  },
  ...
]

For example:

Event e1 = new Event(10, 100, "12345", Arrays.asList(123456, 123457), Arrays.asList(333, 444));
// different uuid
Event e2 = new Event(10, 100, "12340", Arrays.asList(123456, 123457), Arrays.asList(333, 444));
// different orderId
Event e3 = new Event(15, 100, "12340", Arrays.asList(123456, 123457), Arrays.asList(333, 444));
// add these 3 events into 1 array that we'll do the grouping on

And what I'd like to have in output is a relationship that can be represented by the JSON:

I have implemented this manually but it's pretty messy, involves a lot of loops and hard to maintain, I'm looking at ways to make this simple and easy to modify if needed. I've looked at Multimap from google-collections and op4j's zipAndGroupKeysBy, but maybe it's just me but I couldn't come up with a simple solution in this context where I have to group on multiple fields and where the grouping can be nested like above. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

EDIT: To clarify, I'm not looking to write the algorithm with HashMaps because I already have some working code, I am more interested if there is a clean way to do this with exsiting libraries, not limited to guava, google-collections or op4j.

It's hard to tell what you want to do. But... why can't you just have a HashMap for each field on which you'd like to group Events? –  jahroy Jan 22 '13 at 1:27
    
@jahroy I can and that's what I'm doing right now, but that just makes the code a little bit ugly, I'm looking for a more straightforward solution, I've been thinking about using a composite key of (orderId, dpid) combined in a MultiMap, but I'm not sure how this would work and how I could also do the grouping on the second level. –  Charles Menguy Jan 22 '13 at 1:35
    
In my opinion your example does not clearly demonstrate what you're trying to do. You kinda give one example then use a bunch of ... that we're supposed to somehow understand. –  jahroy Jan 22 '13 at 1:36
    
Is there any chance that these "relationships" that you're trying to model will eventually get inserted into a database? I'm still having a hard time understanding your ultimate goal, but it seems like you're trying to model many to many relationships just like JPA does... –  jahroy Jan 22 '13 at 1:40

Sounds like you want an actual database, because you're not going to find a collection type really readily supporting what you're trying to do. –  Louis Wasserman Jan 22 '13 at 2:19
