I am trying to write pandas DataFrame and Series to xlwt Worksheet objects. All goes well except if I try to write numpy.int64 data, in which case xlwt gasps. Changing int64 to float64 in my data and single-level indexes is simple, but what would be the right way of doing that for MultiIndexes?

t = pd.DataFrame(np.array(np.mat('0 1 0 1; 1 0 2 3; 1 1 2 4')))
arrays = [[1,2,3,4],[5,6,7,8]]
tuples = zip(*arrays)
index = pd.MultiIndex.from_tuples(tuples, names=['First','Second'])
t.columns = index
wb = xlwt.Workbook()
ws_1 = wb.add_sheet('simple index', cell_overwrite_ok=True)

In [137]: t
Out[137]: 
First   1  2  3  4
Second  5  6  7  8
0       0  1  0  1
1       1  0  2  3

In [157]: t.ix[0][1][5]

I think the current best way to deal with multiindexes is to use to_csv and import, to_excel works but removes the column level names/index level names. –  Andy Hayden Jan 23 '13 at 2:14
    
@AndyHayden, my intention is to include this code in a class that can handle user-defined xlwt styles, which to_excel doesn't allow and to_csv doesn't support. I also aim to handle column levels as expected. See my blog. –  dmvianna Jan 23 '13 at 2:42

xlwt gasps because isinstance(numpy.int64(1234), int) returns False. Note that there are no problems with numpy.int32 or numpy.float64 because isinstance(numpy.int32(1234), int) returns True and isinstance(numpy.float64(1234), float) returns True See github.com/python-excel/xlwt/issues/15 –  John Machin Jan 27 '13 at 0:17

for i in range(len(t.columns.levels)):
    if t.columns.levels[i].dtype == np.int64:
        t.columns.levels[i] = t.columns.levels[i].astype(np.float64)
