I want to write a program which will "lock" a computer to a user determined wireless network.

  1. It should automatically establish and maintain the connection with the specified network
  2. Other networks should be hidden and/or inaccessible while the program is running
  3. Should be compatible with Windows XP - 8
  4. Should work for all wireless cards

Could I create an NDIS filter driver or NDIS intermediate driver for this? Which one is a better option? Also, the MSDN documentation I linked does not seem to provide good information about how to actually write the driver, where can I find that?

I would think twice about that. Unless you have prior agreement from all users, for example you are doing corporate IT, you won't get any thanks from them for breaking their networking, and probably an enormous amount of flak that will compel you to rethink and re-implement. @EJP It's intended for use in environments where the end-user does not own the laptop they are using (corporate environments with field laptops and the like). –  just.another.programmer Jan 30 '13 at 15:26
Maybe there's a simpler solution. Maybe you can hardware a static DHCP server address in the networking properties and lock them. –  EJP Jan 31 '13 at 5:36
@EJP That's relying on security by obscurity. Namely, that the end user will not try to connect to any network where their static address is valid. –  just.another.programmer Jan 31 '13 at 9:07
I disagree. It's just a different way of ensuring they stay in the same network, which is the actual objective after all. Your NDIS approach is essentially the same. I don't see why one is 'security by obscurity' and the other isn't. –  EJP Jan 31 '13 at 11:25
