This seems very related to this issue (oh, and don't get me wrong, gradle is the bomb...just seem to have some minor issues like these once in a while).

gradle command line ordering not working in this case or source dirs being ignored?

I have a gradle file and if I change the following $buildDir to output instead it works(and I use $buildDir ALL over the place in the file with no issues....

My full gradle file is here and it is failing similar to the issue above in that the generated source code is NOT found :(. I am not sure if it is the same issue or not. Is this a bug?

Man, I keep trying a 100 different things....the one thing we need is a much better one pager document on how to do these properties as all I want is a simple global property with xxxxx=yyyyy and it to take affect everywhere and I can't seem to get it right and have 4 blogs now and a few different gradle pages....I am sure once it clicks I will get it, but this is the one part of gradle that is not as usable as the rest. –  Dean Hiller Jan 31 '13 at 16:55

you want to lazily evaluate the property

sourceSets { 
    main { 
        java {
            srcDir { "$buildDir/generated-src" }
        }
    }
}

the argument is resolved as per by Project#file which describes how it can resolve the result of a closure into a value. This means the evaluation is delayed until after buildDir has the right value.

You are also using single quotes rather than a GString (double quotes) so I would have though this is taking your input as a string literal at the moment so is looking for a src dir named $buildDir/generated-src

The double quotes turn it into a gstring which is a string into which you can place variables (using $). Just using a gstring means it is immediately evaluated from "$buildDir/generated-src" to 'whereverBuildDirReallyIs/generated-src'. The braces turn the argument into a closure so it defers the execution of that block of code until later. –  Matt Feb 3 '13 at 20:45
