Consider a relation with set functional dependencies F as: R(ABCDE)

F={ AB->CDEF , C->A, D->B, C->D, E->F, B->E }

What will be the decomposition of R into 3NF?

Please help me explaining the method of deriving a normal form from given FD's.

I tried searching in google, read a no. of PDF's but couldn't find a general process of arriving into the normal form from given FD's. I know the Inference rules but cant apply them. Can someone please help me out. Please explain a general process for(just) the above scenario, i have the answer but I want to understand the method. Any links/docs may be helpful.

All the functional dependencies are based on candidate keys. So first identify all the candidate keys. Every database textbook I've seen has at least one algorithm for identifying the keys. –  Mike Sherrill 'Cat Recall' Feb 2 '13 at 3:51

I will limit my answer to the resources that helped me understand normalisation when I took an introductory databases class:

  1. Stanfords Database MOOC - Watch the lectures on "Relational Design Theory"
  2. Wikipedia - This article and the BCNF / 3NF articles

@BriteRoy I really recommend you watch the Stanford lectures on this topic. As the woman who gives them is the woman who wrote the book on this topic (Jennifer Widom), she explains it in a way that makes all these sort of contrived problems make sense. Including an algorithm for normal form decomposition. It's free. –  jsj Feb 2 '13 at 4:35
