I have a text file with the format

What I wish to do is plot several of these parameters in a scatter plot over a given date range. I can plot one of these easy enough using

qc<-data.frame(read.csv("tc_h1_qc", header=T))
qc$Date = as.Date(qc$Date, format='%d/%m/%y')
Sys.Date()
Sys.Date()-30

p <- ggplot(qc,aes(x=Date,y=cfov_cov)) + geom_point(shape=1,colour="red") + geom_line(colour="red") + theme_bw() + scale_x_date(labels = date_format("%d/%m/%y"), limits = c(Sys.Date()-30, Sys.Date()))

How do I overlay other parameters, each with a different geom_point colour and create an appropriate legend (a legend similar in style to http://docs.ggplot2.org/0.9.3/facet_grid-27.png although I can't see how I can use facets with my data frame structure)?

Have you tried melting your data.frame using the reshape package? I think that will be the approach to take. The form you will be looking for is date in the first column, column_name in the second column, and value in the third column. –  seandavi Feb 4 '13 at 16:03
    
In your data above, you only have 1 observation per date. Is this a test data? –  Arun Feb 4 '13 at 16:07

It sounds like you just want to plot several of your variables on a single scatter plot with each variable color-coded. This is fairly easy to do with the 'ggplot2' and 'reshape2' packages.

Step 1: Melt your data down, so all values are in one column. In this case, I'm just selecting the [Date] column (as a key), and columns 4 through 7 to plot, since they have similar value ranges.

plot_Data <- melt(qc[,c(1,4:7)], id="Date")

This looks like so:

Step 2: Now, we can easily plot our data, using the [Date] column as the 'x' values, and the [value] column as the 'y' values. We split the groups, color them, and add a legend by specifying the color as col=variable, like so:

library(ggplot2)
ggplot(plot_Data, aes(x=Date, y=value, col=variable)) + geom_point()

You should be able to adjust from here to suit your needs.
