I've been banging my head against the wall for about 3 hours now trying to come up with the fix for this but I can't figure it out. My test program is written as such...

So the Link List is getting initialized from an array and a for loop. My class code for the node and list is here...

I inserted the last "print()" into the insert function as a way of debugging what was happening and the output is quite perplexing as it gives me

5 3 -2 -2 7 -2 7 9 -8 -8 1 -8 -4

But I want the output to be sorted smallest to largest (-8 -4 -2 1 3 5 7 9)

edit: solved...forget to update tmp->next to currN. DERP.

"but everytime it fails for some reason", What fails? doesn't compile? doesn't execute?, doesn't work as you expected? blows your computer? What exactly? Are we to guess? –  Alok Save Feb 7 '13 at 4:21
    
Haha Sorry, I forgot to add that in at the end. When I compile, it simply doesn't add any items into the list. If I remove the else and while case, then it will add the first item in the array, but when I add those two cases, no items get added –  David Gormley Feb 7 '13 at 4:26

Couple of things you need to fix:

  1. PHONY->next is not null , so your initialization will fail :

    if(head->next==NULL) {
      head->next=tmp;
      return;
    }
    
  2. Node constructor should initialize next to 0 instead of this , hence you will never hit NULL condition for end of your list.

  3. in insert in else statement you should start search from head->next, currently you start search from currn = head which is PHONY which is not correct.

  4. You also need to set tmp->next appropriately ,consider this case when you are inserting in middle of the list.

I changed the constructor to initialize to 0 instead of this and updated currN = head->next but I don't understand what to do for number 1 and number 4. –  David Gormley Feb 7 '13 at 4:37
    
ok for 1st , because your head is initialized to PHONY and PHONY next is not initialized its a garbage value, hence your initialization will fail. For 4th , consider your list 1->2->7->10->null , when you insert 3 in there, your prevN will point element 2. so you need to say : prevN->next = tmp; tmp->next = currN –  bits Feb 7 '13 at 4:43
    
How would I fix that? I'm sorry, our instructor did a really bad job of explaining the whole proposition of the PHONY node but my understanding of it was that it's meant to be a NULL node to mark the end of the list. –  David Gormley Feb 7 '13 at 4:48
    
actually 1st condition should be taken care of once you initialize next to 0 in constructor. it wont be garbage, it was this earlier. –  bits Feb 7 '13 at 4:51
    
I have set the constructor to initialize next to 0 instead of this, and now the output goes as far as -8 -4 while printing and then stops. I'm adding the print function to the original question so you can see if that's messed up too –  David Gormley Feb 7 '13 at 4:57
