Is there a solution for automated usb device testing? We're having an USB Device which is an Smartcard reader and USB Stick in one device. We want to test certain situations to figure out what happens if for example the stick gets plugged in and out in a specific time range.

We are thinking about an USB Cable which is controllable over an separate USB connection (Y-Cable).

I've worked in USB development at a couple companies. I can't speak to a commercially available product for simulating attach and detach, but here are some of the ways we tested:

  • USBCV + gold tree - USBCV is pretty fragile but free. It's also necessary for logo compliance. You'll probably want a dedicated station for this test that only one person is allowed to touch.
  • USB demo board - a cheap demo board allows you to quickly prototype different hardware profiles. It's very useful for testing your USB host against non-compliant, malicious, or hard to get devices.
  • Protocol analyzer - analyzers allow you to detect errors that are consumed by some tolerant hosts but a violation of the standard. I recommend the Total Phase brand.
  • Timer + mechanical relay switch - you can put together a cheap, automated attach / detach circuit using your favorite 555 equivalent timer. USB is like flying. When you're in the air, you'll probably be ok. It's the take offs and landings, or attaches and detaches, that are scary. This is a pretty useful tool for the errors that only come up .1% of the time.
  • Current meter - make sure you don't overtax the bus.
  • USB eye test - make sure your signal looks good. You can also get an approximation by looking for packet errors in the analyzer.
  • Manual testing - you can automate to a great extent but you need a human to test at some point.

    If you test the above under different configurations (make sure you try a wide variety of hubs), you'll be off to a good start.
