I am following the lazyfoo.net OpenGL tutorials and I am having a problem in getting my textured shaders to render at all. I have tried to solve this issue for the last couple days and I need some help as I don't know what to do next. I am currently using OpenGL 2.1 with GLSL 1.2, I have also tried on OpenGL 3.2 with GLSL 1.5.

From what I can tell, the problem revolves around the glVertexAttribPointer function and its communication with the shaders. When I took out the glVertexAttribPointer and used a glVertexPointer with a GL_VERTEX_ARRAY (gl_Vertex instead of position attribute in the shader) I was able to get primitive shapes to render. The textures were able to render without the shaders, I just want to be able to use them.

Sorry for having you wait, I was cleaning my guinea pig's cage. The call is in the rest of the code is at github.com/tmuntan1/pumpkin-spice in the branch PumpkinGL under the file PSDisplay.cpp. I didn't want to include all the code because it is not the prettiest after my experimentation and I haven't finished porting the Allegro code to OpenGL yet. The program is being used because I can make some small changes to the shader and use glVertexPointer to get objects to appear. –  tmuntan1 Feb 12 '13 at 17:37

When using vertex-buffer objects (VBOs), the last parameter to glVertexAttribPointer is the byte-offset (i.e., the number of bytes) to your data, and not a pointer to it. From the OP, you probably should be passing zero as the last parameter.

Also, you really want to pass zero into glBindBuffer as compared to NULL. While they may equate to the same thing (depending on who's defining the value of NULL), NULL isn't a GLuint.

The problem is most likely here:

    glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_2D, _texture_id);

When binding textures to a shader sampler you bind the texture SLOT a texture is currently bound to. So try something like this:

    glActiveTexture(GL_TEXTURE0); 
    glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_2D,0);

The value given to glActiveTexture can be anything from GL_TEXTURE0 to GL_TEXTURE0 + GL_MAX_COMBINED_TEXTURE_IMAGE_UNITS (defined by graphics card your using).

To get GL_MAX_COMBINED_TEXTURE_IMAGE_UNITS call

    glGetIntegerv(GL_MAX_COMBINED_TEXTURE_IMAGE_UNITS, ...);
