I have this query that I've optimized to be run in half the time it was in the beginning.

Now I want to improve it's execution creating some indexes, but haven't found the way to do it.

The query is:

I've created a covering index on centros table (centro_id, centro, segcupones), but performance has not improved (or very little). Now execution plan shows using index but also using temporary and filesort.

I've also created index for table usuariohist (DERIVED) but no success, the query plan still the same. I've tried these indexes: (fecha, id), (usuario_id, fecha, id) and a covering index (usuario_id, fecha, id, web, comentario).

Just a couple of pointers - I don't have time right now for a full analysis:

For any query to reach it's maximum potential, if there are explicit values provided, it helps enormously if they drive the query.
Your query has specific values for centros.segcupones and u.fecha_prox_llamada but there is no index on the last one, and a only joint index on the first one, so your first port of call is to create an index for u.fecha_prox_llamada, then maybe see how an single index on centros.segcupones goes.

the index on fecha_prox_llamada didn't work, the filesort was still appearing on explain results. but i solved the thing rebuilding the query with another approach. thanx –  Packet Tracer Mar 6 '13 at 13:15

wayyyy too much stuff for an index question...regardless...you should index all your primary and foreign keys, and anything you are joining on... if you are joining on dates you could index on that field as well. Also keep in mind, you will want to index from group level to member level, so if you have say three fields that identify a member you will want to use those three fields to index, ex. ClientCd - ID - Sub_ID together would create a surrogate key, and also a unique identifier, you would want to index on all three of these fields to get the database searching as efficient as possible while disregarding any demographic information about that person...

Primary and foreign keys are indexes by default, and you don't have to index everything you are joining on. The problem with this particular query is lack of index on u.fecha_prox_llamada –  N.B. Feb 13 '13 at 8:33
    
They don't HAVE to be indexed, in certain instances you don't have to index certain things, but in this case, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work from a performance perspective...? ESPECIALLY ON DATE FIELDS - which in this case, that is what u.fecha_prox_llamada is, so my answer is technically correct, as I explicitly state to JOIN on DATE fields.
