I'm trying to generate code that uses MPI to behave roughly similar to a program with dependencies. Everything works fine if I use a number of processors (e.g. mpirun -np X) where X is greater than the number of tasks I'm trying to model (e.g. number of cases in my switch statement). My program model has a list of tasks, an execution time for each task, and a set of dependencies between tasks. I've generated MPI code that looks something like this (a real case would have between 50 and 600 tasks e.g. cases):

I can compile this fine using g++ -L/usr/local/lib -lmpi -lmpi_cxx -lboost_serialization -lboost_mpi test.cpp and run it using mpirun -np 4 a.out

However, I'm always getting an exception when a case is reached that is beyond the number of processors e.g.

Notice that increasing the number of processors from 2 to three allows me to successfully execute one more case. I'm thinking there is something I'm not understanding about MPI

Could it be that the end iterator in mpi::wait_all(sreq, sreq + 3); is off by one? Probably it should be sreq + 2? –  Hristo Iliev Feb 14 '13 at 10:13
