I'm dabbling with MonoTouch / Mono for Android and currently creating my own subclass of UIColor. Somehow I can't get my factory method work the way I want to (but I do have a work-around).

The following code causes a crash for me:

I don't experience any crashes when I change the return statement into the following:

return (Color)UIColor.FromRGBA (
    r > 0 ? r / 255 : 0.0f,

);

The main difference in this return statement is that a UIColor object is created and typecasted to a Color object, whereas in the crashing version I instantiate a Color object with my parameters. Perhaps something goed wrong when instantiating the base class this way? I'm puzzled.

Why are you subclassing UIColor? MonoTouch is especially finicky about subclassing certain stock classes (for exmaple, subclassing UIButton will crash the app) –  Kirk Woll Feb 13 '13 at 23:47
    
Main reason is to make it easier to create generic code. I don't need to spread #if #else #endif around in the codebase for different platforms for dealing with colors if I can handle it in the model. –  Wolfgang Schreurs Feb 13 '13 at 23:55

It looks like you might be interacting with your UIColor on a background thread. Does BeginInvokeOnMainThread fix your issue? –  jonathanpeppers Feb 14 '13 at 4:11

Well, I realised what I did wrong, I should have checked the error message more clearly.

My AppDefaults class had the following ToString() method (auto-completed by MonoDevelop and likely still reliant on my previous UIColor implementation):

The error message also showed a hint the error occurred when trying to write a string value for the color class:

So eventually the fix was easy: disabling my ToString() method from the class. I hate I wasted like 6 hours on this kinda obvious error, but stuff like that always happens when using a new framework ...

Edit: perhaps I could also override my ToString() method in my custom Color subclass, though this by itself doesn't seem to prevent the crash. I do realise I need to prevent this crash from occurring in the future if some random person would work with this code.

Edit 2: looking at the Crash Log it seems initialisation might not work as it's supposed to. I see a lot of null values (0x000....). Something goes wrong when GetRGBA() is called. Perhaps I need to override some members of the UIColor base class to make this method work? I can imagine GetRGBA() is being called on my custom Color class instead of the UIColor base class, causing the failure.

Edit 3: This guy might have chosen a better approach for my problem. Perhaps this will be the fix I need:

Edit 4: I've decided that to refactor my code according to the last link. My custom color class will store the properties of the color and have 1 or more methods to create native color objects (e.g. UIColor on iOS, corresponding color object for Android).
