I know it shouldn't be too hard, but I'm still a bit of a novice at XSLT. I've got an XML file with a schema like this:

                <xs:element name="VALUE_NAME"></xs:element>
                <xs:element name="VALUE_DATE"></xs:element>
                <xs:element name="VALUE_FAME"></xs:element>
                <xs:element name="VALUE_GLORY"></xs:element>
                <xs:element name="VALUE_GOLDEN_STARS"></xs:element>
            </xs:complexType>
        </xs:element>
    </xs:complexType>
</xs:element>

The XML file looks something like this (abbreviated):

    <INPUT_REPORT>
        <VALUE_NAME>Bob Painter</VALUE_NAME>
        <VALUE_FAME>NOBODY</VALUE_FAME>
    </INPUT_REPORT>
    <INPUT_REPORT>
        <VALUE_NAME>Norman Normal</VALUE_NAME>
        <VALUE_FAME>SOMEBODY</VALUE_FAME>
        <VALUE_GLORY>Sunny</VALUE_GLORY>
        <VALUE_GOLDEN_STAR>SOMEBODY</VALUE_GOLDEN-STAR>
    </INPUT_REPORT>
</ALL_DATA>

The tricky part is I'm trying to get it to display as a html table like so

VALUE_NAME         Bob Painter Norman Normal
VALUE_DATE
VALUE_FAME         NOBODY      SOMEBODY
VALUE_GLORY                    Sunny
VALUE_GOLDEN_STARS

I found some code for printing default values which can make the blanks, but that doesn't help me print the row if none of the reports have that data. Any ideas?

The following transformation prints the row even if none of the reports have a value:

Note that I did the transformation on this XML:

        <VALUE_GLORY>Sunny</VALUE_GLORY>
    <VALUE_GOLDEN_STAR>SOMEBODY</VALUE_GOLDEN_STAR>
    </INPUT_REPORT>
</ALL_DATA>

The input contained a few typos, so I didn't know exactly what to use. The transformation you actually need should be very similar.

Just checked this, works great. It would be nice if it were possible to use the schema so that the rest of the hard-coded values weren't needed, but it still works, which is way better than I had. Thanks! –  rickstockham Feb 16 '13 at 0:44

The following XSLT 1.0 stylesheet makes use of a general-purpose template that matches the INPUT_REPORT element and uses the parameter value to create the first column and to select the appropriate child element for each of the matched INPUT_REPORT elements.
