I am setting up an OpenBSD 5.2 powered IPSEC VPN with npppd for the company I work for. It is a gateway/client VPN for iPhones and Android devices. We need to phase out our insecure PPTP VPN and so we have set up this box.

I am able to get clients to connect to the VPN. The problem I am having, is that no traffic seems to be going back through the tunnel. I know it is leaving the tunnel because I can see packets hitting another remote webserver if I ping it from the client, but it gets no responses. I am sure at this point it is a simple routing issues, but I have been working for hours and hours trying to resolve it, and have had no luck.

I can ping the clients from the BSD machine, and vice versa. I can not however ping anything else from the client device. Here are some relevant config entries:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am no stranger to setting up OpenVPN and PPTP VPNs but I just can't seem to get my head around this one. Let me know if there is any more information I can provide that would be of assistance.

Could you break the first pf.conf line to in and out rules and log them? then tcpdump on the pflog interface and you should see the unencrypted outgoing traffic. is that so? Also as this guide (kernel-panic.it/openbsd/vpn/vpn3.html) says (although a bit outdated) ipsec traffic must be explicitly allowed on the external interface. To me it looks like a pf rules problem. –  ramrunner Feb 20 '13 at 10:49
That is what I thought as well, so to eliminate that as a possibility I disabled pf for testing purposes, still no dice. I just did a tcpdump -i enc0 and I can indeed see the handshake, and then the subsequent traffic. Unfortunately, it is just the one way traffic there as well. I am pretty familiar with using iptables in linux to allow traffic to pass between interfaces, is pf not pretty much the same thing? If pf is disabled I would expect traffic to be allowed on my external interface. –  Chase Higgins Feb 20 '13 at 17:42
Hey man , i can't think of a way that this would work without pf. How are you going to route the packets between the interfaces without some kind of NAT? let's say you have ip.forward sysctl enabled as required and one of the interfaces is on a private IP range. noone is going to route that thing. What i mean by this is that for a working VPN setup you need pf running. at least that's my understanding... i may be completely wrong though and i'm sorry if thats the case (i'm too tired right now :) ). Yeah I enabled pf again to try some more debugging. I am convinced at this point pf is not causing the issue. I am thinking at this point for some reason ipsecctl is not picking up the flows from my ipsec.conf, despite not throwing any errors and allowing the npppd service to start up normally. –  Chase Higgins Feb 21 '13 at 15:24
from npppd manpage (are they set?) : ` Normally npppd works with pipex(4) to accelerate IP packet forwarding,but pipex(4) is disabled by default. To enable it, set net.pipex.enable to '1' using sysctl(8). When npppd uses PPTP, the host system should allow GRE packets, but they are disabled by default. To enable GRE, set net.inet.gre.allow to 1 using sysctl(8).` –  ramrunner Feb 22 '13 at 13:25
