The code is this:

public class Thingy 
{
  public static void main(String[] args)
  {
    System.out.println(Math.random());
  }
}

So, absolutely NOT an unusual case, just a basic example.

When I try to use GCJ's javac implementation to make bytecode instead of the OpenJDK one, it works fine.

neil@neil-Inspiron-M5030:~/javastuff$ javac Thingy.java

But when I try to get GCJ to make native code, I get that linker error. If you want, I can give you the verbose output:

so, I suppose my question is, is does anyone have any idea what might have went wrong?

and I am certain that it was the GCJ version of javac I was using. I just set it to that using update-alternatives just minutes ago –  user2093092 Feb 20 '13 at 21:56
    
and the linker doesn't seem to be broken to preclude GCC-family compilation generally. I don't actually know any C, but as a sanity test for the gcc family in general, I copied a hello world for C from wikipedia and ran it through the gcc command and it compiled fine. no linker error there. –  user2093092 Feb 20 '13 at 22:05
    
it looks like I may not need GCJ anyway for what I was trying to do. Still, I find this error rather strange, so a response would still be somewhat appreciated, because I'm curious. But I'm not desperate or anything. –  user2093092 Feb 21 '13 at 18:04

I guess you need to add --main=Thingy to the command. Since several classes may have a 'main' method, the linker needs to be told which one to use.

Also, you might want to add -o <name of executable>, otherwise, you'll get a 'a.out' file, which is the default executable name for the GNU compilers (and any C compiler actually).
