I'm new to Reactive Extensions, and this is what I've come up with to do a Popup Toaster Notification. When the mouse goes over the toaster, the opacity is brought back to 100%. Otherwise, it fade out gradually.

The code works, but I'm not entirely confident I'm not leaking resources, especially in the mouseOut subscription. In addition, I'm not sure if this is the best way to implement this functionality.

Any critiques, tips would be appreciated.

   slideIn then fadeOut
   unless mouseEnter

What's the closest way to do this in RX?

  1. Is ObserveOnDispatcher() done correctly?

  2. Does the Switch() dispose the previous IObservable for me?

You are still leaving undisposed IDisposables - that Subscribe call creates a subscription that will go out of scope and be collected (potentially killing your animation), but will likely leak other resources. As far as the pause/cancel, that's actually a benefit of this linq-style syntax...here, I've added in my full test rig, give it a try. –  JerKimball Feb 27 '13 at 2:01

Well, first off, you're leaking IDisposables all over the place - each one of those Subscribe calls returns an IDisposable, which are just going out of scope, not being disposed properly. That part is easily fixed, however, using some of the IDisposable containers in the Rx lib:

(snippets from the test harness I threw together around your example code)

The one exception being the MouseOut "canceller":

That I'll have to think about...I think there's a more...rx way of doing it, but I'd have to ponder it a bit. Definitely handle the IDisposable cleanup, tho!

EDIT: Ooh, think I've got something promising...

First off, let's rig up a way to translate Storyboard start/completes into an IObservable:

Basically, this sets up a "Start Animation, and signal us true when it's done" sequence...on to the good part!

  • fadeIn: Animates Opacity to 1.0
  • fadeOut: Animates Opacity to 1.0
  • slideIn: Animates Margin to "in" value
  • slideOut: Animates Margin to "out" value

And these observables (slight name tweaks from your code):

  • mouseEnter: => MouseEnter event
  • mouseOut: => MouseLeave event

You can set up an IObservable that carries the actual sequence thusly:

Thank you. This just blew a hubcap off my mind. BeginObservable() really does the trick, because it avoided all the .Do() calls I had. The only problem I have is it doesn't work. I called showToast.Subscribe(x => Console.WriteLine(x)); Nothing comes out of the subscription. –  Chui Tey Feb 26 '13 at 23:47
    
Do something like: using (showToast.Subscribe (...)) { Console.ReadLine ();} and mouse over that rectangle (sorry for formatting, on my phone) –  JerKimball Feb 26 '13 at 23:50
    
Sorted out the mouseOver problem. The solution runs, but it is not as I intended (i.e. toaster pops out and fades out, interuptible by mouse hover - like Outlook mail notification). I've updated my question with a working sample, but couldn't figure out how to translate it into LINQ syntax. Code review appreciated. –  Chui Tey Feb 27 '13 at 0:53
