What would be the correct way of creating map markers from bitmap?

I'm using Google Maps Android v1 and moving to v2 now.
My map contains multiple markers that are created from bitmap.
Each marker consists of bitmap image and some text on it that could be different for each marker. So I have to modify each bitmap in memory.
I load marker images like this:

private Bitmap getMarker(final String name) {

And then apply custom text on it with canvas:

Marker images are ~5KB size multicolor PNG files on MDPI devices.

With Google Maps Android v1 from time to time on some devices (hard to reproduce) I got java.lang.OutOfMemoryError while decoding Bitmap image. And I have a feeling that I'm doing something wrong... And I would like to know for sure that with Google Maps Android v2 I wont get the same problem.

I have had the same issue a few days ago when switching to v2. I think the most important thing is to try to load the images in memory as less as possible, and therefore to keep in memory your marker original Bitmap as long as you need it.

Here is a sample of code showing how I did it:

This works well, of course, if you have a limited number of different markers. Just create the factory when your activity starts, and destroy it when it stops, and you'll only have two bitmaps in memory, and avoid loading/releasing a lot of bitmaps.

Currently I have 20 different markers. And there will be more in time. And I use dynamic marker loading depending on currently visible map projection. So I don't know if keeping marker bitmaps cached in memory is a good thing, as some of them might be show once and never seen again.... –  Martynas Jurkus Feb 24 '13 at 10:05
    
Well, I think that caching 50 markers is better than loading 200times the same, considering how weird Bitmap garbage collection is in Android. –  thibaultd Feb 24 '13 at 10:07
    
But if I cache 20 "original" bitmaps in memory, then I still have to make a copy of a bitmap for each marker, then those cached bitmaps are kind of redundant? Or is it better to have it loaded in memory and make copies of it? –  Martynas Jurkus Feb 24 '13 at 10:59
    
My opinion is to try to create/recycle as least bitmaps as possible. That's why I have a copy of the original scaled bitmap that I keep in the factory, and another bitmap of the same size that I re-write from the original every time I need to render a new marker from this original to which I need to add some text. I do "copy" this bitmap, in terms of "creating a new bitmap" only once because then I copy it pixel by pixel, avoiding any new bitmap allocation. –  thibaultd Feb 24 '13 at 11:06
