The error happens on this line:

return(rand()% sides + 1);

Here is my program:

You don't check the result (either for sanity or for successful read) of std::cin >> sides. –  Robᵩ Feb 25 '13 at 20:39

It's likely at return(rand()% sides + 1);

Modulo can also cause a divide-by-zero, and it has a higher precedence than addition. You're effectively saying return (rand() % sides) + 1;, and if sides is 0, then you get the exception.

that is what I figured but when I run it everything goes fine till I call pressEnter() then I get the divide by zero. –  ellisgeek Feb 26 '13 at 19:03
