DISCLAIMER: 1) This is a long post, an explanation of my experience today and to ask what i can do to improve the security in my current setup. 2) this client of mine is a casual one, he and I are good friends but i refer to him as my client so ofcourse the answers I gave him are unprofessional. I also am not a security expert, and the details I have given him may have not been right but at the time I felt it was the a reasonable answer to give. At the end of our conversation I told him i will get back and revisit all those questions he had for me and answer them again once I had gained the necessary knowledge to be able to adopt the right ways of handling security.

Here's what happened:

I've got a question after I had an interesting question with the client.. regarding security… the client asked me whether or not the web service's code can be hacked… I went on to try and conclude and explain with literally no knowledge of security concepts…. and said:

well nothing is 100% proof, however php files cannot be downloaded since the server won't allow it as php files are only meant for processing on the server side and therefor the server will reject any download requests to any files. Also i said, the files are stored in the amazon server so its pretty secure… :S I have a .htaccess file that redirects any url requests to the index file so someone can't just write url.com/../../try-to-get-access-to-the-file-containing-database-usernames-and-passwords.

Whether or not what i said is correct let alone if it is actually the way to go about protecting web service files, the conversation continued. He then went on to ask about whether or not people could sniff data from the iPad devices and actually see the JSON data packets being sent over to the server web service urls… for example a particular request on the ADMIN device could be: + web service url: uri.com/Create/OrderTransaction + json data that is sent to it: {"AgentId":"67", "AmountPaidDollars":"400", "AuthCode/Token":"2326asd57f6a"}. He asked he asked whether a sniffer could see this, because if so, then the sniffer could just mimic the request with a JSON Poster plugin in firefox and possible close all over orders by sending in fake yet mimicked json requests..

He had a good point I didn't know how to answer his question, so i went on to say:

Yes. Sniffer can potentially sniff data packets that are sent over to the server and therefor mimic requests! However, I suggest investing in an SSL certificate that would encrypt the communication which will make it impossible for sniffers to decrypt as these technologies are being used by banks and can essentially take years to decrypt.

Now guys, lol, i was sweating at this point thinking OH GOD why did I not read that networking book in college! lol it would have helped me today! But seriously though… is that the way to go about protecting sniffers from knowing how to qualify for web service requests? What is the actual way of securing your web services so that no Tom, Dick, and Harry could start making requests to my web services!! the effects could be detrimental on the database since it would be filled with transactions that were fake! Is an SSL certificate the way to sort this out? or am i missing something else?!

continuing on with my conversation with my client, he asked whether the databases could be hacked…. the questions just started getting worse for me, I quickly thought about it and said well… if they were easily hackable then phpmyadmin and security concerns would be plastered all over stackoverflow.com! but that is not the case.. so i said rather confidently:

Again nothing is 100% secure. It's better to add an extra lock to your home door and locks on the doors inside the house to make it more secure whilst you're away on holiday but it won't guarantee someone not breaking in. Similarly all we can do is help in the aid of more protection. The databases are stored behind the public root folder away from the public eye on the amazon servers. To gain access to that you would need the PavanK.PEM or PavanK.PKK (not sure which one it is) to be able to even root access to the files behind the public root and to be able to do damage. Not even Amazon can give me the credentials again (when i loose my credential files) because its THAT secure. I would have to reopen another instance on the server to get a new set of credential files (PEM files). So only I have access to the folder, unless someone points a gun to my head and asks me for the details you have nothing to worry about.

In short, he smiled and said cool. I did say that I can make a second app that would keep all the CEO Panel separately from the main app, with different databases etc to reduce any concerns the client may have regarding security issues. to which he has agreed to. seems like security is a major aspect to this company… so i don't want to take shortcuts and lie to him that it is super secure if my actual system is not. I felt that it is.. but i feel i can improve on it. that being said… this is my question that I have for you guys.

so guys, besides me having just been able answer the questions to the client, what can i do to seriously improve security. more so authentication between devices and the server. changing server is not an option at this time. I can however invest in technologies if that is the way forward… such as using an SSL certificate… so far thats all i know about… i've heard about oath.. and oath 2.. whether that will help with anything I'm not sure. Anything specific that i can do to improve the setup?
