I am running a Perl script where it uses backticks for system calls. The code segment is shown below.

What happens is, after running for a while, it sometimes prints S3 and does not move forward.

When I check system resource usage with top, I see that Perl flies up to 90% CPU usage whereas normally it uses 2-3% since there are some sleep statements. It seems that backtick goes to an infinite loop.

Also, I am confident that the executable is not running indefinitely.

In the code, I tried to break the problem by using alarm; but still it is going to infinite loop sometimes.

Any suggestions?

I'm not forking a process, instead just setting an alarm. I have written it just before my backticks. The output is "SIGCHILD: undef". Thanks. –  Günay Gültekin Mar 1 '13 at 8:22

Are you absolutely sure the child executable isn't running indefinitely? Did you check the process list for it when the Perl program was stuck? This doesn't look inherently wrong so got to eliminate all possibilities. –  Matthew Walton Mar 1 '13 at 11:25
