I've already asked this question at but I have not yet received an answer.

I'm trying to render multiple windows, using DirectX 9 and swap chains, but even though I create 2 windows, I only see the first one that I've created. My RendererDX9 header is this:

The link shows code that looks very similar to the code that I have based my code on, but the windows (they were seperate as well) there had a HWND handle. Since I want to make my engine as platform neutral as possible, I've decided to instead put the HWND windows in my renderer and recreating them based on my RAT_Window input. I thought I adapted the renderer enough to make it work, but that's clearly not the case. What I would like to know is why it doesn't work and how I can fix that, without having to put DX9/Windows specific code in my RAT_Window class. – Friso1990 Mar 6 '13 at 0:52

Once I have optimalized the engine for DirectX 9 I want to add an OpenGL renderer so the engine can also be used on Linux and MacOS. I can't remember the proper term for it, but I want to make as many classes as possible platform independent in my engine because of that. – Friso1990 Mar 7 '13 at 1:01
That is called cross-compatible :) but if you want to write DX code and OpenGL code you'll probably have to write 2 separate pieces of code for each one, and in a final stage you would just make a main program which handles the differences between opengl and directx. Also you would need to adapt your code (by making a separate codebase or #if defined etc) to make it truly work / compile on other systems too. – user1182183 Mar 7 '13 at 8:27

The "Swap Chain" approach you used for rendering the multiple windows is sounds good compare to creating multiple devices for multiple screens.

Have you checked the codesampler tutorial for rendering the multiple windows using swap chain. If not, pls find the below link which has a working sample project for rendering the multiple windows using swap chain. This code is purely windows Directx 9 specific but you could added your wrapper to achieve platform agnostic.
