If I want a program like cat that I can take, practice and learn from as a good example, can I take this file or would any other source be preferred? Ideally the same cat.c would run on linux, solaris and bsd and I've now tried some:

Since you tag openbsd, you can see the implementation in /usr/src/bin/cat/cat.c. If you don't have the source checked out: anoncvs faq , section "Using CVS to Get and Update your Source Tree". Implementing cat is also mentioned in "The C programming language" by K&R on chapter 7 and improving it is excercise 8-1. Solutions are available on the net, google returned one on github

The FreeBSD version is here. It has a lot of libc calls so you'll want to take a look at that. YOu can get the whole tree via svn checkout https://svn0.us-west.FreeBSD.org/base/head src

I downloaded the svn version. It's interesting to see how error handling is localized, whether file is read byte by byte, in chunks, line by line and how to make the same version compile on linux, solaris and bsd. –  909 Niklas Mar 7 '13 at 22:29
