I am trying to load 3d models in my application with jPCT-AE. I read through several tutorials and I think I understand the basics, but I have yet to succeed in integrating the 3d files I have.

I am making use of pieces of codes I found on tutorials package com.example.jpct;

So the applications fails, here is my logCat

the 3d file is in the "assets" folder, and is a 3ds valid file (I tested it on other 3d engine)

Can you help me please?

Try to construct your InputStream in loadModel method with this instead:

InputStream stream = mContext.getAssets().open("FILENAME.3DS")

And see if it changes anything or not. Here the Context is the Application Context which you can get from the Activity that creates the renderer:

// the "this" refers to your "MainActivity"
Context mContext = this.getApplicationContext();

I can confirm this works. Initially I was seeing a black screen because my 3ds file format was too large (2.9MB). I then changed to a 3ds file in the kilobytes range and it worked great. Thanks for your answer. – JDS Apr 20 '13 at 19:29
cube=Object3D.mergeAll(Loader.load3DS(getResources().getAssets().open("chair.3ds", 5));

Use this line to load 3ds file. In the same manner you can load other file formats supported by jPCT-AE.

InputStream stream = new ByteArrayInputStream(filename.getBytes("UTF-8"));

I guess.. the above line in your code does not read the file in to the InputStream,, instead of that its just copying the filename string object byte array..
