when i do a count on rows (code #1) - i get the correct count of around 880 rows.

when i group the count, by date - it suddenly grows by around 100 (code #2).

i'd appreciate it if someone could help me understand my issue!

you are using DISTINCT and GROUP BY which both do the same thing. you should use one of them

if you want use GROUP BY

then try this

   GROUP BY tblApplicantSchools_shadow.applicantID

in your first query its already grouped by tblApplicantSchools_shadow.applicantID so i dont know why you group again in the second query

EDIT:

MySQL extends the use of GROUP BY so that you can use nonaggregated columns or calculations in the SELECT list that do not appear in the GROUP BY clause. You can use this feature to get better performance by avoiding unnecessary column sorting and grouping. For example, you do not need to group on tblApplicantSchools_shadow.applicantID in the following query

In standard SQL, you would have to add tblApplicantSchools_shadow.applicantID to the GROUP BY clause. In MySQL, the name is redundant.

thanks. the distinct i need because there could be a few entries of the same applicantID with statusID = 4 - and i only want one of them - per applicantID –  kneidels Mar 12 '13 at 9:18

you are right - this was partial code i threw together. i am grouping so that i can see how many applicants i got - on a certain day. such that i am doing the count + the date, here is the actual code: select DATEADD(ww,(DATEDIFF(ww,0,[tblApplicantSchools_shadow].updated)),0) AS Datesubmitted ,count(DISTINCT [tblApplicantSchools_shadow].applicantID) as TotalAppsPerWeek –  kneidels Mar 12 '13 at 9:43

I think it happens because distinct in the second query applies to a group, so tblApplicantSchools_shadow.applicantID, that have distinct [tblApplicantSchools_shadow].updated collapse in the first query and count as one, but in the second query they don't, because they are in different groups.
