I'm trying to pass a function as an argument in another function. the following code works when no classes are used but when i tried it with class for qt the following error occur...

error: argument of type 'void (MainWindow::)(int, int, int, int, void*)'
does not  match 'void (*)(int, int, int, int, void*)'

The error occurs at line

 cvSetMouseCallback(window_name,on_mouse,NULL);

Member functions are different than regular functions (because they have to pass in an extra hidden 'this' parameter).

This is why it says:

void (MainWindow::)(int, int, int, int, void*)

Does not match:

void ()(int, int, int, int, void*)

The MainWindow:: part is significant.

If you are using C++11, you can use std::function and std::bind and it'd work (see this question). A static member function will also work, because static member functions don't have the this pointer either, and behave like regular functions (but in a namespace, and with private member access).

The callback method has to be static and public (or a non-member function). As you have found out it works if its a non-member function, but you get an error if it's a non-static method. You should define your MainWindow::on_mouse as:

This is not an uncommon problem. The solution is to have a wrapper function:

static void MainWindow::on_mouse_wrapper(int event, int x, int y, int flag, void *param)
{
   MainWindow* self = reinterpret_cast<MainWindow*>(param);
   self->on_mouse(event, x, y, flag, NULL);
}

Then edit your

cvSetMouseCallback(window_name,on_mouse,NULL);

to:

cvSetMouseCallback(window_name,on_mouse,this);

then the now its showing.. error: cannot declare member function 'static void MainWindow::on_mouse_wrapper(int, int, int, int, void*)' to have static linkage invalid use of member 'MainWindow::startDraw' in static member function similar error for all the variables ..... –  Sanu Mar 15 '13 at 4:35
