I have two joined subclass reading from the same table having as a discriminator a nullable field. I have been able to read the two entities using a subselect like this:

Everything is fine but when I try to delete one of the two entities I get a syntax error:

NHibernate.Exceptions.GenericADOException was unhandled

Any better idea about how to discriminate entities from the same table by a nullable field?

Instead of using the sub-select you could use discriminator based inheritance mapping, with a formula for the discriminator, i.e.

<class name="BaseEntity" table="t_entity">
   <!-- base id and properties mapping -->

  <discriminator formula="CASE discriminator is not null 
                          WHEN true THEN 'EntityA' 
                          ELSE 'EntityB' 
                          END" />

  <subclass name="EntityA" discriminator-value="EntityA">
    <!-- more mapping -->
  </subclass>

  <subclass name="EntityB" discriminator-value="EntityB">
    <!-- more mapping -->
  </subclass>
</class>

You should then be able to delete the entities.

unfortunately I can't use a discriminator in a joined-subclass but thanks anyways :) –  abx78 Mar 17 '13 at 23:40

You are right, you cannot use a discriminator with a joined-subclass. But you can use it with a sub-class and since both sub-classes are using the same table this table can be declared in the base class as per my answer. The answer for me was to split the two entities in two different tables keeping a common base table the common fields and set the in each child table their own valuable informations.

        <!-- common mapping -->

    <joined-subclass name="EntityA"
        table="t_entity_a">
      <key column="t_uid"></key>
      <!-- specific fields, i.e.: -->

    </joined-subclass>


    <joined-subclass name="EntityB"
        table="t_entity_b">
      <key column="t_uid"></key>

    </joined-subclass>

</joined-subclass>
