I have a One-to-Many relationship: A ProductCategory can contains many Product. This is the code:

This is Servlet code which use the 2 entities:

ProductCategory category = new ProductCategory();
category.setCategoryName(request.getParameter("category"));
Product product = new Product();
product.setName(name);
product.setPrice(price);
product.setDescription(description);
product.setCategory(category);
User user = userManager.findUser("Meow");
product.setUser(user);
productManager.createProduct(product);  // productManager is an EJB injected by container

And this is the error:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: During synchronization a new object was found through a relationship that was not marked cascade PERSIST

Why does this error happen? I marked the field as "cascade = CascadeType.All"!

You're trying to save a product. And this product is linked to a category. So when JPA saves the product, its category must already exist, or there must be a cascade configured so that persisting the product cascades to persisting its category.

But you don't have such a cascade. What you have is a cascade saying that any operation done on a category cascades to its list of products.

so what should I do? If I change the code to: @OneToMany(cascade= CascadeType.PERSIST,mappedBy="category") private List<Product> products; it does not work either. It gives the same error. –  user477768 Mar 17 '13 at 9:59

The cascade is on the wrong side of the association. You're telling JPA: when I ask you to persist a category, also persist its products. But you don't ask JPA to persist a category. You ask it to persist a product. And nowhere have you said that when a product is persisted, its category must also be persisted. –  JB Nizet Mar 17 '13 at 10:05
    
so on what side do you think the cascade notation should be on? As long as I know, in a Many-To-One relationship, it's always on the inverse side (means the one-side or by another saying, the side which contains the @OneToMany annotation). –  user477768 Mar 17 '13 at 10:12

An association has only two sides, and your cascade is on the wrong one for waht you want to do. What do you deduce? Your assumptions are wrong. You may put a cascade on whatever side you want. –  JB Nizet Mar 17 '13 at 10:15
