Right then, I have another one. This is the same proc as I was working with before. The results weren't what I needed so went back to the drawing board. The system is the same:

SQL Server 2005 || Excel 2007 || SQL Management studio 2008R2

I am having a problem comparing two dates. The error that SSMS is throwing makes no sense. Here is the code:

The problem is:

When I try to run this code, I get the following error:

Msg 402, Level 16, State 1, Line 149
The data types text and varchar are incompatible in the equal to operator.

This is most vexxing as the comparison is a date match and not text. This I have tried: 1. lots of internet searching 2. changing the case statement to an if statement but couldn't get the syntax right. 3. changing the dates to datepart functions only pulling the year. we know that should return an int 4. changing the comparison to "1=1" which is clearly numbers and should always be true 5. tried converting to concatenated text (yyyymm) 6. talked to one of our SQL developers (which I am not by title but expect to be by the end of this project :) )

the really strange thing is that this general code works

The execution plans fails or doesn't produce anything for the bad code. when I turn off the nocount, I get this: it is a compile error (13 row(s) affected) (1 row(s) affected) (6620 row(s) affected) (1 row(s) affected) Msg 402, Level 16, State 1, Line 146 The data types text and varchar are incompatible in the equal to operator. it is a compile error –  M.Ford Mar 18 '13 at 17:56
    
I think we'd need more context (where the CASE is being used, and the datatypes of all columns involved) to figure out why you're getting the error. But, your expression just seems to be testing whether @counter=0. –  GilM Mar 18 '13 at 18:15
    
The goal of all this effort is to have a stored proc that will present a list of all the projects through out the year for costing. some projects have a one time cost, others are monthly. since a project is point in time, I have to create a way to list the same project for the completion of the year, not just the production date. the projection part works, the cost doesn't. the plot date is the field used for the projection. with the case statement, I check the plot date against the real date if they match, return the cost, 0 if they don't. the case is the check. test dates, return in int. –  M.Ford Mar 18 '13 at 18:35
    
here is the other weird thing, the line number of the error corresponds to insert into #results not the case statement but when the case statement is commented out, it works fine –  M.Ford Mar 18 '13 at 18:45

I think the problem isn't that part of your CASE statement, I think it's:

when frequency = 'OneTime'

because the frequency column is of datatype text.

You might try:

  when cast(frequency as varchar(20)) = 'OneTime'

or something.

you were absolutely correct. I did some searching online for the error specifically and found some stuff that got me in the right direction. to test, I commented the 'OneTime' case statement out but left the inner one and it worked. strangely, I tried changing the datatype in the creation of the temp table and that didn't fix it. it is working now. thank you. if only the error trap was better it would have been easier to track down. it is also weird that the check worked as it was without the inner case statement. I came back to post the solution but you beat me to it :) –  M.Ford Mar 18 '13 at 19:25
