I'm trying to get started with OpenCL (Intel opencl-1.2-3.0.56860). I managed to install the OpenCL SDK from Intel under Ubuntu 12.05 (using "alien" to convert the rpm packages to *.deb packages). Now I try to get my first simple OpenCL program running... To run the program I need to use set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH:

My Problem is, that I always get the error "CL_DEVICE_NOT_AVAILABLE" when calling clCreateContext(...).

First of all make sure your CPU is supported by Intel's SDK. Your program runs fine on my machine. OpenCL 1.1 from Intel. – user995502 Mar 19 '13 at 15:14
    
Thanks for testing. What kind of hardware are you using? Is that the only CPU in this computer? I successfully run the code on the GPU. Same PC but Nvidia platform. – Stefan K. Mar 19 '13 at 22:54

Intel OpenCL CPU needs at least SSE 4.1. The Core 2 Duo only goes up to SSSE3.

Edit: some version of the Core 2 Duo support SSE 4.1 Here is the list of supported processors for the Intel OpenCL drivers http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/opencl-release-notes#2

Some versions of Core 2 are not supported. " All other versions of Intel® Core™ 2 processors are not supported"

You can use, for example, CPU-Z to find out what version of SSE you CPU supports.

Install the AMD OpenCL CPU driver. It only needs SSE2. On windows I installed the Radeon GPU drivers even though I did not have a AMD GPU. It still installed the AMD OpenCL CPU drivers and it did not conflict with the Nvidia drivers. I don't know on Linux. But now I can use Intel CPU, AMD CPU, and Nvidia GPU OpenCL drivers.

You're correct, some version of Core 2 Duo have SSE4_1. Anyway, here is the list of supported processors software.intel.com/en-us/articles/opencl-release-notes#2 Some versions of Core 2 are not supported. " All other versions of Intel® Core™ 2 processors are not supported" I know my friend had an older Intel CPU and the Intel OpenCL drivers would not work on it but the AMD ones did. He upgraded to an i5-2500k recently and Intel works on that as well now. – user2088790 Mar 20 '13 at 8:10

Ok, the AMD drivers are working. That solves my problem and answers the question, wether it should actually work (calculating stuff on the same CPU that the operating system occupies). Thanks a lot! – Stefan K. Mar 20 '13 at 9:38

On Linux, the AMD OpenCL drivers may be faster on Intel CPUs anyway :-) However, on windows Intel OpenCL drivers work better than AMD on an Intel CPU. phoronix.com/… – user2088790 Mar 20 '13 at 10:29
