When I compile, javac outputs:

Note: Some input files use or override a deprecated API.
Note: Recompile with -Xlint:deprecation for details.`

I wish to suppress this warning. Trying -Xlint:none does not seem to help

Why avoid it? You should replace calls to deprecated APIs with solutions that don't use a deprecated API. –  Joachim Sauer Oct 12 '09 at 13:24
because i'm compiling modules of other developers with many lines of code. trying to convince them all to go over the code and fix it is futile. –  IttayD Oct 14 '09 at 10:35

It makes sense to keep all uggly deprecation messages. This can help to convince other people to fix them properly. –  mcoolive Feb 25 at 18:16

From what I can tell in the docs, you can't do it on the command-line.

According to the javac documentation, -Xlint:none only disables warnings "not mandated by the Java Language Specification". It appears that warning you of the use of deprecated APIs is managed by the language spec.

Your best option would be to fix the use of deprecated APIs. However, an option would be to add the @SuppressWarnings("deprecation") annotation to the classes or methods that are using the deprecated APIs.

For Jdk 5, I use -Xlint:all . This appears to suppress all the warnings of deprecation, unchecked, etc. –  Abi Jun 30 '11 at 8:16

Two possible ways:

  1. don't use deprecated API
  2. Use @SuppressWarnings("deprecation")

I asked how to turn off the warning. Obviously I can avoid using deprecated API, but since the code base involves two teams, I cannot persuade them all to do that. –  IttayD Oct 14 '09 at 21:36

For others that were Google searching this problem and stumble upon this thread like I did...

Try: -Xlint:-deprecation

It seems to work on JDK 6... not sure about others.

With Java 6, neither the @Depreated annotation, nor a comiler flag will help you here. The only solution that worked for me was to put a javadoc comment with the @deprecated (small caps) tag on the deprecated method:

  * @deprecated overriding deprecated method
public javax.xml.bind.Validator createValidator() throws JAXBException {...}

(The example is from a class that derives from JAXBContext.)

(I didn't import the deprecated Validator class to avoid a warning on the import statement.)

Thanks Wolfgang. The @SuppressWarnings("deprecation") annotation was not working completely, some of the warnings were still being output. Adding the @deprecated comment suppressed them all. –  Eric Thorbjornsen Aug 1 '12 at 0:43

If it's a core Java API, there is almost certainly a replacement that will do what you want. Run the javac with that extra parameter, and then look at the API for the deprecated method and replace as appropriate.
