I am porting my reader of parallel texts from .NET to Android. The main view displaying a parallel text is a custom one, it draws text word by word on
DrawText method in View's
onDraw(Canvas canvas) event. The problem is when the number of words is big (that happens with larger resolutions and smaller font sizes), the rendering speed becomes very slow (it may take up to seconds of time to render a page of parallel text).
I cannot draw sentences (that is, strings consisting of several words) instead of words because of the following two limitations:
- The text has to be justified, and
- I need to know the exact location of every word on the screen.
Obviously the physical rendering itself in Android is very fast, but the wrapper methods called every time in
DrawText must slow everything down when they are called repeatedly many times.
I solved a similar problem in .NET by PInvoking native Windows API methods of rendering strings, which allowed me to have lightspeed rendering even on slow machines.
What are the options to achieve an acceptable word-by-word text rendering speed on Android?
