I a variable with random text:

$var = 'ABC09ABDEF';

I need to find out if text contains known value. The amount of known values is limited.

What would be the most efficient way do that?


    $array = ('01AB','02AB','03AB','04AB','05AB',...,'10AB'); // known values
    function check()
        foreach ($array as $key => $value)
            if (stripos($var, $value) !== FALSE);
                return TRUE;


function check()
    $match01AB = (stripos($var, '01AB') !== FALSE);
    $match02AB = (stripos($var, '02AB') !== FALSE);
    $match03AB = (stripos($var, '03AB') !== FALSE);
    $match10AB = (stripos($var, '10AB') !== FALSE);
    return ($match01AB || $match02AB $match03AB || ... || $match10AB);

It's clear that the Version #1 is more extendable. But performance wise?

Version 1 is probably more efficient as its less characters, faster to parse, interprest, and run JIT machines on, for example.

Version 1 is better anyway because its much easier for the list of fixed values to be changed later.

While I agree that version 1 is better, I don't see the difference in "native search functions". I would say that version one is faster because if it finds a match it will stop looking for other matches while the version 2 will look for every match regardless. Well first rinchik needs to remove that break statement) – Jason Sperske Mar 22 '13 at 18:42

Preferred the first version .. its very dynamic

function check($var, $array) {
    return array_filter($array, function ($a) use($var) {
        return stripos($var, $a) != false;

I'd like to think there is some internal interpreter magic going on within the newer native functions but I couldn't possibly tell you for sure if they really are any faster...


  $var = 'ABC09ABDEF';
  $arr = array('01AB','02AB','03AB','04AB','05AB','...','09AB');

  $known = array_filter($arr, function($a){
      global $var;
      return !(strpos($var, $a)===false);
