In my previous question, I've stated I'm somewhat new to Java's JFrame features. I'm trying to create a JFileChooser that will get a directory in which a file named setup.exe will be saved. That's irrelevant, though. I'm receiving this error:

In Java, public classes must be defined in their own file, having the same name (with a .java suffix) as the class name.

You defined a public class named definitiveVoid in the file UpdateMechanism.java. And you tried to put code directly in this class, outside of any method. That isn't valid Java.

Swing is hard and complex. Don't try to use it before knowing the basics of Java.

Moreover, classes, by convention, start with an uppercase letter in Java.

I'm going to break the rules and use Swing. Nevertheless, could you explain how I'm to define the variables of definitiveVoid so that they will be public to ActionListener? –  cygorx Mar 24 '13 at 17:54
    
No, because I don't understand anything to what you want to achieve with this class. It doesn't make any sense to me (and to the Java compiler). –  JB Nizet Mar 24 '13 at 17:56
    
Nor do I. Through intensive and profoundly lost skill called Googling, I found that "maybe if I put it inside a public class it will work!" This is my first time using Java in three years. I knew you can only have one class. Forget the idea of definitiveVoid and look at the code within its block. How do I get fc and openButton to the global scope? –  cygorx Mar 24 '13 at 17:59
    
There is no global scope in Java. Stop googling, step back, and start reading an introductory Java book or the Java tutorial explaining classes, objects, variables, arguments and fields. Using Swing without understanding these won't lead you anywhere. –  JB Nizet Mar 24 '13 at 18:03
    
That's probably what I should do, but I'd rather not read a 700-page book again. So I'll just do nothing. In fact, everything I have in the current code is from memory. I've only Googled JFileChoosers and this issues. Relearning Java isn't something I'm too interested in. I'm using Java because it's convenient for my issue. –  cygorx Mar 24 '13 at 18:04
