# Conic equations: symbolic variables and plotting

I'm working with Matlab R2012a. I have 3 conic equations (Eq1, Eq2, Eq3) from the previous calculations:

vpa(Eq1,3)

ans =

3.71e-18*x^2 + 3.58e-17*x*y - 2.52e-15*x + 2.32e-17*y^2 - 2.19e-14*y + 2.43e-14

vpa(Eq2,3)

ans =

7.53e-18*x^2 + 6.88e-17*x*y - 4.72e-15*x + 1.06e-17*y^2 - 4.4e-14*y - 4.88e-14

vpa(Eq3,3)

ans =

-0.00486*x^2 - 0.0884*x*y - 6.54e-5*x - 0.403*y^2 - 0.00808*y + 0.504

# Here are my problems:

1. How to know whether the equations dependent of independent. I tried to collect all the coefficients using coeffs function..then rearranged and saved it in a matrix A, and then find the rank. But it tells the rank is 3, which means all of the 3 eqs are independents. From the literature, there should be 2 independent eqs and 1 dependent. Is it correct that i tried it using rank(A)? or is there any other way to check that?

2. I want to solve the equations and find the solutions of x and y. I have tried to use:

s=solve(3.71e-18*x^2 + 3.58e-17*x*y - 2.52e-15*x + 2.32e-17*y^2 - 2.19e-14*y + 2.43e-14==0,7.53e-18*x^2 + 6.88e-17*x*y - 4.72e-15*x + 1.06e-17*y^2 - 4.4e-14*y - 4.88e-14==0)

It gives good and same results as I compared to the result from Wolfram (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/89/cobagrapheq1daneq2solve.png/). But i need to have something simpler..like this (using the variable instead of the original equation): s=solve(Eq1).

Since the Eq1 contains symbolics equations, the results when I try s=solve(Eq1) are totally incorrect.

any suggestion?

3. How to plot the conics along with the intersection points, as shown in picture (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/89/cobagrapheq1daneq2solve.png/)?

I have tried to use

ezplot (3.71e-18*x^2 + 3.58e-17*x*y - 2.52e-15*x + 2.32e-17*y^2 - 2.19e-14*y + 2.43e-14==0)

but it gives only a straight line on the figure.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
