Below I have included some sample data and a procedure I am using to return search information. I am running into a problem if I search for Format it is returning Information as well! How can I exclude if the text is within a bigger string?

Here is the table:

To search for the exact word add the WHERE clause:

WHERE a.x.value('.','nvarchar(MAX)') like @findstring+' %'
    or a.x.value('.','nvarchar(MAX)') like '% ' + @findstring+' %' 
    or a.x.value('.','nvarchar(MAX)') like '% ' + @findstring 
    or a.x.value('.','nvarchar(MAX)') = @findstring 

I found a more elegant way here:

Where ' ' + a.x.value('.','nvarchar(MAX)') + ' ' like '% ' + @findstring + ' %'

Or, if you want to allow punctuation after the word (like "Format."), then use this one:

Where ' ' + a.x.value('.','nvarchar(MAX)') + ' ' like '%[^a-z]' + @findstring + '[^a-z]%'
