I get the error:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: [Ljava.lang.Object; cannot be cast to [Ljava.lang.String;
at Book.Organizer.Desk.RubCol.BookMainKeeper.main(BookMainKeeper.java:25)

I do not know how to fix this. Could anyone help me out by telling me what I'm doing wrong?

Your toArray() method is making an Object[], not a String[]. –  Sotirios Delimanolis Mar 27 '13 at 20:13
    
you need to call toArray( new String[0] ). toArray() returns Object[] as mentioned above –  tigran Mar 27 '13 at 20:25

You can't cast Object[] to String[] just like you cant cast Object to String. You will probably need to return real array of type T.

How to do this? One way is to add type of array as argument of toArray like

public T[] toArray(Class<T> clazz) {

    @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
    T[] result = (T[]) java.lang.reflect.Array.newInstance(clazz, numberOfEntries);

Or if you are sure that array will only contain objects of type T but not its subtypes like some kind of T1, T2 you can get type of array by reading it from one of stored elements like

T[] result = (T[]) java.lang.reflect.Array.newInstance(
        bag[0].getClass(), numberOfEntries);

but I would say that first way is better, since it let you create array of needed type, and eliminate risk that you will create array of some kind of T1 type instead of T.

To be honest, I fail to understand the code you put up... how would I define the contents of getClass(), or how would the toArray(Class<T> clazz) work? I am a noob, I know.. –  AndyApps Mar 30 '13 at 14:43
    
@AndyApps Every object contains information about its class. To get this information in real-tile (when program works) you can use yourObject.getClass(). This method will return instance of Class which contains meta-info of class such as full name of class, info about its fields (visibility, type, name), methods, and so on. With this object and java.lang.reflect.Array you can create array of exact same type as class - kind of new SameClassAsPreviousObject[size]. –  Pshemo Mar 30 '13 at 14:59
    
so in the main I would use .toArray(pileBooks<String> x) or something like that, and in toArray I would use something like the reflect.Array? –  AndyApps Mar 30 '13 at 15:09
    
@AndyApps In main you should probably use String[] check = shelf2.toArray(String.class); since you want it to return String[] and as toArray use my first code example. You will have to add implementation to fill this new array with correct content. –  Pshemo Mar 30 '13 at 15:17
    
Did it, it works now, it displays the three book titles I added to shelf1, used shelf1.toArray instead of shelf2 since it had no elements –  AndyApps Mar 30 '13 at 15:30

You should save it into an Object array, instead of a String array:

Object[] check = shelf1.toArray();

System.out.println(check[1].toString());
System.out.println(check[2].toString());
System.out.println(check[3].toString());

Prints:

Java 3rd Edition
Pre-Calculus 2nd Edition
Lava World

check is an array of Objects. The Object class is the parent class of all classes, including String. It's checked during runtime, that's why your code compiles, but gets an error during execution.
