I have these divs called beats, and I want to register when they are clicked. However, I can't seem to get them to register a click at all, either by clicking them, or calling a JQuery click event on a specific div in the console. Either way, nothing is getting registered.

The measureView.js creates this beatView, which creates a beat inside the parent measure.

It seems your view element is never inserted in the DOM. Is it inserted outside this code? –  Loamhoof Apr 2 '13 at 15:49

Backbone takes your events object and delegates all of those event types and selectors to the view's el. Any HTML that you want events to register on needs to be inserted inside the view's el, and the el needs to be inserted onto the page.

Typically I set up my views like this:

I added the el: '.beat' as a temporary holder, and that got the event handler working, and then in the initialize(options), i reset the el by this: this.el = options.singleBeat;. I have verified that the options.singleBeat is passing in the correct id for the beat, but when I click any single beat, it calls the toggle function on all subsequent beats, but not itself. so if ai have 30 beats, and I click on the first beat, the remaining 29 get toggled, and if I click on beat 29, the last on gets toggled, and if I click on the last beat, nothing happens. It seems Array related..... –  chris Frisina Apr 2 '13 at 16:30

That's going to confuse things a little by having a class selector as the el; you'll wind up with too many els for the same view. What you're describing sounds like you might need view for EACH beat. With what you've written now the quickest path to success would be changing the el selector to some parent element that contains all of the li.beats, and don't change the el. view.delegate events is what attaches event listeners, and that only happens before initialize, so changing the view's el is leading to unpredictable behavior –  Alex Mcp Apr 2 '13 at 16:39

I ended up passing the context to itself via the JQuery proxy function in the render
