Ok, I have almost everything working. The only problem is that whenever I click on the new entry I have added to the listview through my dialog, the app crashes instead of displaying the phone number in a toast. What I want it to do is as follows(most steps are working correctly)

  1. I enter the dialog via the menu button on the emulator, and clicking on the menu item for my dialog.
  2. I enter a name and phone number(I used mine as a test)
  3. It passes that data as a Contact Object to the ArrayAdapter, which is added to a ListView in the MainActivity.
  4. When I click on the new entry, it gets the name of the contact, then looks through the database for the phone number associated with that name and displays it in a toast.(That part is not working correctly, causing the aforementioned crash)

Context context = null; //<<<<

you forget to initialize context with current Activity Context before passing it to Toast.makeText method. initialize it as:

Uh, guys, I need a bit of help here, but I got question-blocked. I have an ArrayList called shapeArray, and I'm trying to make it so that when a user draws a line, as soon as they lift their finger from the screen, it takes that line and stores it in the ArrayList as an object. it looks like you are calling makeToast with null as context. The Android doc says:

Context context = getApplicationContext();
CharSequence text = "Hello toast!";
int duration = Toast.LENGTH_SHORT;

Toast toast = Toast.makeText(context, text, duration);
toast.show();

Toast.makeText(context, "Phone Number: " + c1.getPhoneNumber(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();

In this line simply replace the context with getApplicationContext() and you're done. The problem was due to the context being initialized to null.
