have a gridView populated by bitmaps that animate in when the bitmap loads asynchronously. Sometimes when flinging the gridView some of the items do not render properly. The animation will trigger but the bitmap will simply not show up.

I have confirmed that the bitmap is indeed there (at least the data) but it just doesn't render.

This happens when flinging the gridView quickly but also happens on a slow scroll as well. It seems that the view recycling is not working properly. Here is my code:

Two things worth trying -

For chaining animation operations use a listener:

Use setHasTransientState() to ensure the views are not recycled in the ListView/GridView. See this DevByte video for more info.
