I'm selecting a cell in a UITableViewController (I'll call Controller A) that is presented in a popover from another UIViewController (I'll call B). B is set up as the delegate of A, so I can send messages to B when the user interacts with A. This is all working the way I want.

I've added some code to A to start loading information from CoreData when the user selects one of the rows. It's going to take a little while, so I want to show a waiting screen right after the user makes their selection. In this question I just addressed how to show the waiting screen before actually beginning to load the data, but it doesn't seem to work when passing messages between controllers.

My waiting screen is a UIView subclass that just has a UIActivityIndicator and a UILabel with a quick message on it. The waiting screen is a @property of B, and I call

self.waitingView = [[WaitingView alloc] initWithFrame:self.view.frame];
[self.waitingView setHidden:YES];
[self.view addSubview:self.waitingView];

in B's viewDidLoad. Then, I have a required @protocol for showWaitScreen on A. In A's willSelectRowAtIndexPath, I call [self.delegate showWaitScreen];. On B, I have

-(void) showWaitScreen
{
    [self.waitingView setHidden:NO];
}

I have put some breakpoints in, and all the calls are being made the way I want, but I never see my wait screen. My best guess is because A is still open as a popover on B, and that is preventing any changes to B's UI. Is that the case? If that isn't the problem, what is? In any case, how do I get my waiting screen to show up?


EDIT: Some information about my screen layout: B is a pretty cluttered screen - there is a plain background (UIView) that takes up the whole screen. On top of that UIView, there is a UIScrollView and a UIToolbar - the toolbar just takes up the very bottom of the screen though. In the UIScrollView, there 5 UITableViews of different sizes all spread out with small gaps between. A is displayed from one of those tables, and will fill roughly the top half of the screen. The waiting screen is a square that is half the width of the screen on each side, and centered on the screen. Therefore, the waiting screen will overlap part of A and several of the UITableViews on B.

So you've got a UIViewController that presents a UITableViewController in a popover. User makes a selection in UITableViewController and you want the UIViewController to to show a waiting view. If I have that right, how is self.waitingView added to the view hierarchy? Is it nil when you're setting the hidden property? –  Aaron Apr 5 '13 at 22:52
    
@Aaron: You are correct. I edited to add the rest of the code pertaining to this from the viewDidLoad on my UIViewController. I think the waiting view should be added to the view hierarchy at the [self.view addSubview:self.waitingView];, correct? –  GeneralMike Apr 6 '13 at 0:51
    
Gotcha. OK. Is the self.waitingView happening in B's viewDidLoad? Have you checked the frame of self.waitingView? Perhaps it's the size you think it will be? Also, you might want to try just adding it right away to the view to see where and if it's positioned properly. I usually do that with custom sub view additions. Just check to see where it'll be placed, then implement the logic to place it dynamically. –  Aaron Apr 6 '13 at 2:18
    
@Aaron: Sorry for delay, was away from my Mac for the weekend. I took out the logic for hiding the wait screen, and now it's showing up right where I want it to, so I don't think it's a problem with my wait screen not being created correctly, or with it's frame.
