I have three Models in a rails app, User, Hikingtrail & Photo. I would like to set the user_id foreign key for a new Photo when a User creates one.

  1. Each User has_many :hikingtrails & has_many :photos
  2. Each Hikingtrail has_many :photos & belongs_to :user
  3. Each Photo belongs_to :hikingtrail & belongs_to :user

I've split my form for creating a Hikingtrail into two parts as it is quite long, the first part (new.html.erb) only requires the user to enter data which requires validation (i.e. name & address), after the users submits/creates the Hikingtrail the App routes them to edit.html.erb where the User can update the Hikingtrail with more information & upload photo.

After a User logs in they can create a Hikingtrail, when they do this it sets the user_id foreign key in the Hikingtrail model. I was able to achieve this by adding @hikingtrail.user = current_user in the create action of the Hikingtrails Controller.

I would also like to set the user_id foreign key in a new Photo when a user attempts to update a Hikingtrail. There is no Photos Controller as all the Photo attributes are nested within a Hikingtrail. I've tried a similar approach to the above by adding the below code to the update action of the Hikingtrails Controller:

but it either adds the Photo without setting user_id foreign key in the database or I get an undefined method 'photo' error.

I have also tried adding

to my hikingtrails controller but this gives me a undefined method 'user_id=' error.

You need to use build method

thanks but that didn't work, it created two records in my database. One record with the user_id field but with the image & hikingtrail_id empty & another record with the image & hikingtrail_id but the user_id field empty. –  Creed Bratton Apr 11 '13 at 11:11
    
may be changing models in such way, that User has many hikingtrails, and hikingtrail has many photos, and User has many photos :through=>:hikingtrails will achieve your goal? –  Joe Half Face Apr 11 '13 at 18:14
    
Thanks Joe, I tried has many photos :through=>:hikingtrails but it had no effect other than when I tried to display the photo's with <% @user.photos.each do |photo| %> <%= image_tag photo.image_url(:thumb).to_s %> it displayed the photo's belonging to the hikingtrails created by the user, not the photos created by the user. –  Creed Bratton Apr 11 '13 at 21:07

I solved this by approaching it differently.

I used a hidden field in my nested photo_fields form to set the I set the user_id attribiute in the Photo model:

<%= f.hidden_field :user_id, :value => current_user.id %>

Thus when the user created a new hikingtrail their user_id was submitted with the form & updated the Photo attributes.

I'm not sure if this is the best way but it works. I'd be interested if anyone with a more rails experience could comment on this solution.

This will leave a security hole in the application. Any user can edit the hidden field and set some other users id. –  manoj Apr 11 '13 at 17:41

is a polymorphic association something I should look at, I've read a little about them but should probably look more closely at that method. –  Creed Bratton Apr 11 '13 at 21:09
