I'am trying to return a string from a function but it doesn't compile. When I replace the std::string& type with int& it compiles, however I want to return additionally to the boolean a std::string how do I do this?

I'm using luabind 0.8.1, most recent Lua, boost 1.4, VC++ 2008

I copied your code verbatim, added the #includes, made a main() for it and a lua_State, and it almost compiled. Then I just removed the comma at the end of the luabind::def line, and it compiled. I don't know if the comma is all that was wrong for you, but try what I have below and let us know.

Note: compiled with g++ -c file.cpp, GCC 4.2.4, Luabind 0.7 and also 0.9 (pre-release), on Linux.

nope the comma is not the problem Same problem with your code seems to be a Visual Studio Compiler bug or boost or luabind 8.1 which boost version are you using? –  Hendrik Oct 27 '09 at 19:23

also not working using boost 1.32 and luabind 0.7 so it seems this is indeed a vc++ compiler limitation the luabind creators did not knew/tested. My current workaround is returning a luabind::object (table with all return values) and then using the unpack (unbox table) in a wrapper lua function... not very nice. –  Hendrik Oct 27 '09 at 22:02
    
I am using Boost 1.38. Too bad about VC++...maybe try emailing the Luabind maintainer--he does work on it. –  John Zwinck Oct 29 '09 at 1:54
