I want to create a new data frame df3 from data frames df1 and df2. The dataframes contain zipcodes and states. One data frame has more zipcodes than the other. I want combine them and add NA for Zipcodes that do not have a value for the corresponding Zip code in the other file.

merge() should do it:

merge(df1, df2, all=T)

I believe this one merges the rows and not the columns. Should end up with 4 columns. as shown in df3 –  Johnny Liseth Apr 12 '13 at 18:37

@JohnnyLiseth, it takes less time for you to copy+paste this solution (confirming that it in fact gives you exactly what you are describing) than it does for each person answering your question to copy and paste your sample data, let alone type up an answer for you. The least you could do is actually _try_ the solution given before expressing doubt that it may not work. Then - and only then - you can indicate what specifically about the solution does not fit your question. –  Ricardo Saporta Apr 12 '13 at 19:34
    
I made up some sample data for the online question. I have similar data that I am using. So I was checking the answer using my data, and it does not work, I have no idea why. I did copy the sample data and it did work on that. Thanks. How can I show the output of my merge in the comment window? –  Johnny Liseth Apr 12 '13 at 20:31
    
I found the problem. On my original data, the data column was named Total on both df1 and df2. This is why I ended up with three columns and the zip codes would repeat. Sorry for the confusion and thank you for the help. –  Johnny Liseth Apr 12 '13 at 20:47

rbind.fill from the plyr package might be what you are looking for:

  > plyr::rbind.fill(df1, df3, df2)
