I propose to code an SVM variant on CUDA and I am at the very beginning. I try to decide whether to use a library or not and if I use a library what kind of drawback might have and which library comes with better utilization agnostically to the device I use. What are the advices from the master of CUDA coding for such a newbie researcher?
If you are aiming at high performance (I suspect it is the case for most people who bother to go GPU way), then don't use GPU library functions as building blocks for your application unless the library functions can do almost all your task or you have no idea/no time to write the function by yourself.
GPU is a very specially designed piece of hardware, its performance is ultra sensitive to your algorthim and data arrangements, calling library functions tend to mess that up.
Not to mention at the moment the GPU libraries are not as mature as these CPU libraries and the overhead to call library functions from GPU is magnitudes higher due to the way GPU works.
