I'm trying to Capture an Image from a window given the Handle/DC. I want to capture the Image with all the transparency and pixels so I decided I'd use GDI/GDI+.

The below code is what I have, but when it "writes" the bitmap, it writes it wrong :S In other words, the file is unreadable. It is blank. Yet it is 20kb in size :S

Any ideas what is wrong?

I edited the post. I changed it from the Marshal.StructToPtr to bw.Write where I write all the parameters of the struct. That seems to work except that it now the file is 3.92 megabytes in size! It looks like: i.imgur.com/vrSqo9x.png It's 1366x744 in size I'm not so sure why it's 3.92mb! In C++, the same code works fine and the image is 100-200kb at most. –  Brandon Apr 15 '13 at 4:17
    
Clearly you are not using the same approach in C++ if you're getting a 200kB file. You are storing the (uncompressed) results of GetDIBits. A quick estimate for the size of just the bitmap data, not counting headers, is 1366*744*4 = 4065216 bytes = 3.88 MB –  Ben Voigt Apr 15 '13 at 4:19

Well something is different. Based on this line in your C++ code size = ((width * BitsPerPixel + 31) / 32) * 4 * height;, I'd say it's the image dimenstions that are very different in the 200kB file. –  Ben Voigt Apr 15 '13 at 4:28

If you're looking for a quick band-aid fix to get this done (it just needs to work, not used often, etc) consider just loading the image back into .NET and re-saving it with PNG compression enabled. The .NET framework will handle this for you and the file size will be a lot more optimal. Of course, if this is for a real-time application this isn't ideal.

That is a nice idea but I think I'll just put the C++ code into a DLL and load that up instead. I was really hoping to get it done in C# alone. I only want to get it done because I want to do screenshots that maintain transparency in C#. But I guess not for now.. Thanks anyway. –  Brandon Apr 15 '13 at 4:52
